The UM-Flint Reading Center provides a unique opportunity for K-12 students to receive instructional support in reading from university graduate and undergraduate students studying literacy assessment. Your child’s success in reading is of paramount importance to overall success at school. This nine week program focuses on reading comprehension, fluency, word study, and building self-confidence in your child’s reading ability to foster interest, pleasure, and success in reading. By assessing your child’s current reading strategies, your child’s assigned teacher will individualize the instruction based on the particular strengths and areas of challenge that will most support your child’s progress. In its fourteenth year, the Reading Center has served more than 800 children and families throughout Genesee County from public and private schools.
The university provides an ideal setting for your child’s work as it opens the door to learning on a college campus. Teachers and students will work in various locations around campus while making regular visits to the Reading Center Library. The Reading Center Library is home to a collection of over 2,000 children’s and young adult books housed in a relaxed, child-centered library. By inviting your child to browse and select from a range of books suited to nearly every interest (and intended to spark interest!), the Reading Center Library reinforces that reading is supposed to be pleasurable. A small observatory room off the library offers an opportunity for others to observe a child and teacher working together as they explore a text and boost reading skills.
